3 (Mindful Type A) Reasons I Joined Beautycounter

September 4, 2016

Like so many,  I started buying more organic foods, paying more attention to our household products, and learning about the sad state of U.S. toxics reform when I became a mom.  Over the last seven years, I've grown more and more frustrated that - even with all of my education, resources, and privilege - I still struggle to figure out if I'm doing right when it comes to the health of myself and my family.

As I learn more about the mind-body-spirit connection and work to cultivate greater wholeness in each of those domains, I've been excited to learn more about Beautycounter and their mission to get safer products into the hands of everyone.   Here are 3 reasons why I've decided to work with Beautycounter to advance this critical mission and join the company as a consultant

1.  My time is my most precious resource: Beautycounter saves me time.

Like any Type A leader, I prize efficiency.  I want to find the quickest, most efficient way to get anything done and my biggest pet peeve is having my time wasted.  Sound familiar?

When it comes to my overall health, I want to put in the time to my yoga and meditation practice (and running and hiking and playing with my kids and cooking dinner for my family and savoring a great glass of wine and spending time with dear friends).  I *don't* want to spend time worrying about whether my moisturizer, blush, and facial cleanser may be causing me long-term harm because of toxic chemicals.

Beautycounter bans more than 1,500 questionable or harmful chemicals from all of their skincare products and screens every potential product for safety.  If I'm purchasing from Beautycounter, I simply don't have to worry or do my own all-consuming research.  One less thing on my to-do list means more time what matters most.

2. If something's worth doing, it's worth doing right: Beautycounter is always working to become better.

When I read on the Beautycounter website:

"It's not easy work, but it's well worth it.  This is about progress, not perfection. Because every little bit helps."

It's music to my Mindful Type A ears.

While my Type A nature leads me to often strive for and value perfection, I also know from experience that transformational change rarely happens overnight -- especially when we're up against the inertia of the  status quo.  As I work to become aware of and let go of the aspects of my Type A personality that don't serve me, I find myself drawn more and more to transparent leaders, teachers, and companies that value the journey along with the destination.

3. Leadership matters:  As a certified B-corporation, Beautycounter puts education, advocacy, and public benefit first.

Beautycounter is changing an entire industry in the name of women's health. As CEO Gregg Renfrew recently wrote:

"Research shows the vast majority of American consumers remain totally unaware of the risks associated with many ingredients. Most falsely believe the FDA already regulates personal care products. The truth is, the US personal care and beauty industries are severely under-regulated. When it comes to cosmetics safety, the EU has banned or restricted over 1,400 ingredients, while the US has only taken action on 11.

Peer-reviewed scientific literature shows that reducing daily exposure to certain harmful chemicals presents a major opportunity for reducing the chance of future health problems, from certain cancers to reproductive issues. Major professional health organisations, such as The Endocrine Society, have sounded the alarm on the hormone-disrupting ingredients found in many products. For this reason, I see the need for action as urgent. This is not a cosmetics or personal care industry issue; this is a women’s health issue."

I started Mindful Type A because I wanted to help leaders have a transformational impact through greater wholeness in mind, body, and spirit.  Beautycounter was founded to intentionally contribute to the movement for toxics reform so that women and their families can be their best selves.  That's leadership I want to be a part of.  Simply put, we can't do more good in the world, if we don't look and feel good.  For me, Beautycounter is a step in the right direction.
